FocusCalm FAQs

System Requirements

FocusCalm works best on devices that support Bluetooth v5.0 including Apple iPhone version 6 and higher, iPad 3rd generation and higher, and most Android smartphones and tablets running Android version 8 (Oreo) and higher. If you have an older version, you may experience difficulty connecting or be unable to connect your headband to the app.

Most connection issues with the headband are due to your device’s Bluetooth version. If your device uses Bluetooth version 4 or higher, you may be able to resolve connection issues by enabling ‘USB logging’ in your device’s Developer options settings. This is a relatively simple, though technical process that has some security implications for your device. We recommend contacting a trusted support person for assistance.

If your Bluetooth version is 5.0 or higher, contact our support team for further assistance.

General Questions

Neurofeedback is also called EEG biofeedback or neurotherapy. It makes use of the brain’s ability to change and reshape brain networks. Neurofeedback training can be used to sharpen attention, relieve stress, enhance your mood, and improve your learning and behavioral control. Although the technology is complex, the process is simple. You will learn to alter your brain activity the same way you learn every other skill. You learn through feedback and practice. With neurofeedback, you get instant feedback about changes in your brain’s activity. Every half-second, your brain activity is compared to your target or goal. You can then learn and practice how to influence your brain activity to move closer to your goal.

Our daily training is designed to be 10-20 minutes, but you may use the headband for as long as you’d like and use it for multiple sessions per day.

Some people report seeing results immediately, and some after several sessions. You should plan on completing at least 20 sessions.

There is no limit to the number of users that can use one headband. Each user just needs to set up an individual account on their mobile device or tablet.

If you are using one mobile device or tablet, you just need to sign into/out of your account to switch users. To sign out of the app click on the ‘settings’ tab and scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen then click on ‘sign out’. It’s important for each person to have their own account. If one account was used by multiple people it would cause the brain data to be inaccurate and skew each person’s results.

Questions about the FocusCalm headband

(V2 – Bluetooth version)

Your headband has a flexible inner band. On the side opposite the power button, gently separate the flexible band from the more rigid outer ring to expose a printed label. There, you will see five rows of text. The fourth (label includes ‘BT Name’) is your headband’s Bluetooth name.

Press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds until you feel a vibration followed by two short vibrations on the headband.

Position the headband on your head, making sure the center sensor is positioned above the bridge of your nose on your forehead, approximately mid-way between your hairline and eyebrows. The power button of the headband should be positioned over your right ear. Make sure there is no hair or anything else between the sensor and your skin at the front gold contact points.

Press the power button and let go. You should feel a single vibration from the headband.

To charge the headband, plug the smaller USB-C end of the charging cable into the headband (beneath a plastic flap opposite the power button) and the larger USB port into your computer or another power source. The LED indicator light on the headband will pulse red as it charges. Once the light turns green, your headband will be fully charged.

There is no limit to the number of users that can use one headband, but each user must set up an individual account with its own subscription on their mobile device or tablet.

Here are three steps you can take if your headband isn’t working properly:

Questions about the FocusCalm headband

(v1 – WiFi version)

Remove the sensors from the pack included with your headband by carefully pushing them out of the packaging. Align the small tab on the sensor with the notch found in each of the sensor positions on the headband. Press them carefully into each of the three positions on your headband making sure the sensor tabs are aligned with the notches on the headband.

Your headband has two extendable areas, one on each side of the headband. Pull gently to expose the inner rails. On the inside of the rail above the behind-the-ear sensors, you will see three rows of text. At the end of the top-most row (beginning with ‘SN’), you will see a code that ends with 4 numbers and letters. Carefully note the last 4 characters…This is your SN code.

1. Power On Your Headband

- Look for the 5 small LED lights above the ear hook on your headband. If you see lights flashing across the display, your headband is powered on. You may skip to the ‘Perform a Reset’ section.

- If you don’t see any lights, press and hold the power button directly above these lights long enough to see all 5 lights illuminate in order from left to right, then let go of the power button. If, after doing this step, no lights are blinking, your headband may need to be charged. Use the included MicroUSB cord and an available USB power source (not included) to fully charge your headband before use.

2. Perform a Reset

- Once powered on, you should press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds to reset the device. You will see each of the 5 lights illuminate in order from right to left and then go dark, but continue to hold the power button until all 5 lights turn on again. They will begin flashing outward from the middle. Your headband is now ready to connect.

3. Please go to the “My Headband” section in the app and follow the instructions to connect your headband.

Position the headband on your head, making sure the center sensor is positioned above the bridge of your nose on your forehead, approximately mid-way between your hairline and eyebrows. The two sensors on the ear-hook should be snug behind your ear and be making good contact with your skin. Make sure there is no hair or anything else between the sensor and your skin at each contact point.

Press and hold the power button to see all 5 lights illuminate in order from left to right, then let go of the power button.
