Stressed Out? Deep breath in…ahhhhh
Sighing is your body’s natural response to feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
It can make you feel good, melt away tension, and ease your mind and body.
Given these benefits, this question might seem strange…
But do you feel like sighing is a good thing or a bad thing?
A lot of people connect sighing with being stressed.
Whenever you sigh someone always seems to pipe up and ask “What’s wrong?” or “Are you okay?”
We’re social ceatures by natures. We like to check-in with one another. Those questions are a good way of showing we care.
But I don’t think anyone would ask “What’s wrong?” if they saw you meditating or taking a walk, or watching a funny video to reduce your stress.
Rather than thinking about sighing as a way to reduce stress, lots of us have taken it only as a sign of being stressed.
But is it? Have we stigmatized sighing?
We should celebrate stress reduction in all its forms, including sighing. Next time you see someone sigh know that they are now a little less stressed than they were before. Feel good about that and then offer your help.
