Stay Focused While Studying: Tips & Tricks

Most students have already gone back to school and that means studying is upon us. Whether it’s an exam, a project, or a paper, studying requires a certain degree of focus and concentration. For many students, focusing for an extended period of time is difficult, especially with all of the distractions present in our lives. Check out these studying tips to improve focus and improve concentration this school year.

1. Create a Study Environment

If focusing is difficult for you, you should always choose an adequate environment that will help you concentrate. Choose a place that will be quiet and free of distractions. This place could be the library, your bedroom at your desk, or the corner of a coffee shop. Ensure you have a comfortable seat, a power supply, and a cleared table-top. Put your phone away and do not open social media on your computer.

2. Set Clear Goals

When studying, you should always set clear and precise goals for yourself. For example, if you are studying for an exam and have five chapters to review, an achievable goal could be reviewing two chapters before your first break. Small, achievable goals help you achieve the overall goal – doing well on the exam.

3. Create a Study Schedule

Carve out a section of your day dedicated to studying. This can change as the level of studying changes. If an exam is coming up, maybe you need to carve out two hours everyday to prepare for that one exam.

4. Decrease Distractions

Try to block out all possible distractions when you are studying. This includes your phone, social media, family or friends, and any other activity that is not studying. Distractions only impede your focus and concentration.

5. Play Focus Games

When you are not studying you can actually improve your focus by playing games that are aimed to do just that. Try a neurofeedback wearable like FocusCalm to improve your concentration with meditation, calming games, and focus games. The App is designed to target your memory, attention, pattern recognition, and reaction time which will all help you focus on studying.

6. Relax & Focus, Focus & Relax

Max Newlon, President of BrainCo, has some unique tips for focusing that may sound counterintuitive at first. Essentially, in order to really focus on a task, sometimes what we actually need to do is relax. Oftentimes, the reason we’re unable to focus on a particular task is due to stress or distraction – your mind may feel as though it’s going in a million different directions. In order to focus, start by calming your mind and collecting your thoughts. While this may seem difficult at first, the more you’re able to relax and let your mind go, the more you’ll be able to focus. And if the opposite is true – if you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed – sometimes focusing on one thing can help ease that sense of anxiety.
