What is Job Burnout & How Can I Prevent It?

Uncategorized
Job burnout is becoming more common amongst employees across the majority of industries. Many employees are overworked, stressed, and exhausted. And, unfortunately, after this past year and a half, more people are feeling more burnt out than ever and are having a difficult time separating their work from their personal life. Thankfully, there are ways to prevent burnout and take steps to manage stress and anxiety in more meaningful ways.

What is Burnout?

Burnout is the mental, physical, and emotional state of complete exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress and work anxiety. In most cases, burnout is related to an individual’s job, and once burnout is felt at work, it can start to affect other areas of your life, including your home and social life. Burnout occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and that you cannot keep up with the tasks at hand. It is not necessarily one or two bad days at work, instead it is prolonged bad days that only seem to get worse.

Steps to Prevent Burnout

Even before the signs of job burnout present themselves, you can take steps to prevent any type of mental, physical or emotional burnout. We recommend the following:
  • Eat a balanced, healthy diet high in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.
  • Exercise regularly – aim for at least 30 minutes of walking every day at the minimum.
  • Get enough restful sleep every night.
  • Take time away from your screens to give your eyes and head a chance to rest.
  • Practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to clear your head and reduce work anxiety.
  • Speak with your supervisor about your workload and how to manage it together.
  • Say “no” to new tasks and responsibilities that you cannot take on at work.
  • Schedule free time with your family, friends, or just by yourself.
